Interlocking Carpet Tile
As the name implies, interlocking carpet
tiles are made so that the edges can interlock as they are designed
with ease of installation in mind.
Interlocking Carpet Tile - A Snug
Fit
Each carpet tile fits in snugly against another, as the
edges have been cut exactly for a perfect fit in a wave providing a stable, snug
fit. Imagine a jigsaw puzzle, but with all the edges exactly the same and where
each piece of the puzzle is a complete image - no confusion and very easy to place
together.
Interlocking carpet tiles also come with self
adhesive and this means they are very easy to install. The joining of the tiles is
such that there will be no movement between squares, bonding together.
One of the interlocking carpet tiles you will find is
Milliken's Legato carpet tiles. They have an integrated pad and come with self
adhesive properties. The range of styles and quality of these are
excellent.
Compare this to traditional wall to wall carpet that comes
in rolls. Think of the size, the weight and having to carry it, extend it, cut it,
join at the seams and all the carpet that is left over. You will also have to add
pad.
Installing interlocking carpet tile is much
easier, but you should buy some extra tiles.
Why?
All things being equal, the chances are that somewhere
along the line your carpet will be stained or damaged. As carpet tiles have longer
life, time will increase these probabilities.
The answer - replace the tile from the
stock you kept. There is no need to change the whole carpet just the particular
tile. The replacement stock will be from the same production lot and this means
that the color lot will be the same. There is always a degree of variation between
production lots, even though it may not be noticeable at first sight.
You must still measure the room but no longer have to worry about calculating waste
a carpet roll produces that can go up to 12 %. You will still have to make some
cuts but the amount that is waste is much less, and easily covered with the extra
tiles you brought. For insurance purposes 5% extra (calculated in whole tiles)
should be enough.
Installation planning is easy, but you
should make sure the floor is level and clean to help adherence. Start to lay the
carpet tiles from a corner of the room and working outwards. There will probably be
a need to cut the last layer of interlocking carpet tiles against the finishing
wall. A sharp utility knife is good enough.
The interlocking feature of the carpet makes a snug fit
that will not shift, as can happen with carpet rolls - specially as this type of
carpet is placed on top of the pad.
For many people the icing of the cake is being able to
combine different colors and even designs within the same style creating a unique
carpet for your home and rooms.
